Strategic Decision-making in Leadership

Effective leadership requires adept  decision-making skills as defined  in an article from the Corporate Education Group. The choices of leaders and the outcomes of those choices determines how successful a company will be. This requires the leaders to possess knowledge, experience, and intuition, as well as a process to define the problem and to form and implement the most expedient course of action that resolves the problem with minimal undesirable outcomes.

Based on the article, here are five steps in making strategic decisions:

  • Determine the problem, its cause, severity, urgency, and the outcome that is expected.
  • Gather information on the probable causes of the problem; glean facts, data, constraints, and scrutinize the problem.
  • Develop and evaluate viable options that can serve as solutions.
  • Consider carefully the gathered information, then choose the best course of action.
  • Implement and monitor the decision wherein resources are identified and allocated, communication strategies are developed, and the process of solving the problem is undertaken.

Leaders must be able to make effective, timely, thorough, and practical decisions; these skills are needed to formulate sound and most well-suited decisions for daily operations and strategic planning.

To hone your strategic decision-making skills, you are required to follow an established methodology and solid organizational approaches. You also need to liberally impart critical, logical, and rational thinking skills to come up with strategic decisions. This is necessary for different industries including healthcare; it is indeed intersectional across industries.
