FAQs

Overview

What is eCornell?

eCornell is Cornell University’s online learning platform which offers professional development courses.

I travel a lot to attend to company matters. How suitable are eCornell programs for me?

The eCornell program is designed for people who cannot afford to take days away from work and travel extensively. You can do the programs in your hotel room, at the airport while waiting for your flight, and in between meetings. You can download materials to read and start writing your assignments and discussion points when you are on the plane.

Why should I register and pay through Genashtim?

As the legitimate partner of eCornell, Genashtim can provide local support in your time zone and your local language. Genashtim can also provide eCornell alumni discounts per-course basis, which is not available directly from eCornell.

I am a corporate client and wish to tailor the courses to the specific needs and wants of the company. Is this possible?

Our team of Learning Consultants are trained to do this. Please email us at ecornell@genashtim.com, or call us at our local number, as indicated on our website.

Enrollment

What are the requirements for enrolment?

eCornell, as an executive education program from Cornell University, is designed for working executives. There will be active discussion boards, assignments, and projects, which need to reflect actual work experience. This will contextualize the learning and make a meaningful contribution to the learning group, which is the hallmark of this unique form of collaborative eLearning. We reserve the right to review your resume before enrolling you into the program. This is to ensure that you will get the most from this learning program and, similarly, for the benefit of the other learners in the group.

How do I enroll in an eCornell certificate through Genashtim?

Our Learning Consultants will guide you through finding the suitable course/certificate to enhance your career. They will also help and support you as you take each course.

Are there any prerequisites for any of the certificates or courses?

There are generally few prerequisites as long as you are a working executive. Your Learning Consultant will advise you on the prerequisites after getting the information you provided in the first question above. Most certificates have no course sequence to follow when enrolling, except for some certificates with technical-related topics.

What will happen if I move to another country in the middle of my program?

It will be seamless. You just continue with your courses. The only thing that you need to do is to inform us of any change in contact details in case we need to get in touch with you. We also need to know your new country to set the right time for your course reminder.

Can I enroll in a course on my own?

Your Learning Consultant is responsible for your course enrollment.

We will provide you with available schedules that you can choose from. You will be enrolled in one course at a time to allow you to manage your schedule. However, if you already have planned your schedule and wish to be enrolled for the rest of your courses, just let your Learning Consultant know your preferred dates, and he/she will enroll you accordingly.

Can I be enrolled in my next course right after I finish my current course?

Due to the long list of learners, classes tend to get filled quickly. Picking a schedule starting at least a month has a higher chance of availability. Your Learning Consultant will notify you should there be an earlier schedule open for enrollment.

Can I avail of a single course only and not a certificate?

Yes, however, we encourage you to sign up for a certificate program. Taking a course will earn you a letter of completion only. On the other hand, you will be awarded a Cornell University certificate when you complete a specific program.

When registering as a student of eCornell, how will it be different from registering as a Cornell University student?
When registering as a Cornell University student, you must physically attend classes on the Ithaca campus in New York. When you register as an eCornell student, you will study in a virtual online classroom with real international classmates and an instructor in the USA. You can access your courses and classes anytime, anywhere in the world.
Why can't a full class take just one additional learner?

When the class is full, we will not be able to add any extra students because Cornell University is very strict about this. They have determined the maximum class size so that the instructor can ensure that every participant understands all the content and demonstrates the learning application. Cornell University needs to ensure this outcome quality as they will issue a Cornell University certificate should the right combination of courses be taken.

Pricing & Payment

How can I pay should I decide to take the course/certificate through Genashtim?

Avail your desired course or certificate through Genashtim’s registration page, and you can pay either by credit card or bank transfer as a mode of payment.

What is the cost for an eCornell certificate or course?

The certificates range from 3 courses to 18 courses, with prices ranging from US$ 999 to US$ 7,999. The majority of the certificates are made up of 5 or 6 courses and priced at US$ 3,750.

The per-course price is US$ 795. You may take each course individually to build up to the certificate of your choice.

How long can I be enrolled in a course/course if I'm availing the "pay as you go" scheme?
If you are availing of a single course/courses through the “Pay as you go” scheme, you are given a maximum of 3 months to be enrolled from the date of the payment. .
Do you offer any group or corporate discounts?

If you are a group of learners wanting to enroll together, or you are thinking of adopting this program in your company, please contact our Learning Consultants to discuss a corporate package.

Do you have a physical office where I can visit?

Our company is registered in Singapore, but we have representatives who can meet you at your most convenient day and time to discuss further things. Or you may contact the learning consultant in charge directly via all messaging apps, whichever is more convenient for you.

Can I ask for a refund if I decide not to proceed with my certificate/course?

Learners who have paid the full retail price for a certificate are allowed 30 days to change their minds from the payment date for a full refund (less banking/transaction charges). If you have consumed one or more courses, these will be deducted from the payment made on the certificate at the retail per-course price. No refunds will be given for individual course payments, special promotions, or discounts.

Certificates and Courses

Are there exams to take at the end of the certificate program?

As the certificates will be issued by Cornell University, there are rather stringent processes in place to ensure that you have acquired the learning. For each course, there is a combination of:

• Quizzes (multiple choice questions)
• Discussions
• Boards with a certain degree of mandatory participation
• Assignments and projects
• Reflective essays
Hence, no examination is necessary.

How are the courses organized?

A majority of the certificate courses run for two (2) weeks except for a few certificate courses that run for three (3) or four (4) weeks. All courses start on a Wednesday and end on the second or third Wednesday after that.

This gives you 2 weekends to catch up in case your working week gets too hectic.

Except during Day-light saving time (DST) where it will be moved one hour extra, course will start on the following local times:
Wednesday 8pm Jakarta time
Wednesday 9pm Malaysia, Manila, Singapore time
Wednesday 10 pm Japan time

Ending time:
Wednesday 2 weeks later at 10.59am Jakarta time
Wednesday 2 weeks later at 11:59am Malaysia, Manila, Singapore time
Wednesday 2 weeks later at 12:59pm Japan time

There are no specific times that require you to be online. It is suggested that you access the course regularly during the 2 weeks to sync with the other learners in your class and have meaningful discussions with them on the discussion boards.

If you are new to eLearning, completing the course might take about 10 to 12 hours over 2 weeks. Our more seasoned learners can get through a course in 6 hours. Generally speaking, the content in each eCornell course is equivalent to the content quantity you will find in a 2 to 3-day physical workshop or seminar.

Please click here to watch a 2-minute video on how a class is run.

Most of the courses will have a class starting every month. Some courses have two classes each month, while others have classes in alternate months.

After you have paid and enrolled, you can select your class dates for each course and plan your entire program. If something comes up along the way, and you will not be able to attend any particular class, you need to give us 48 hours notice before the class starts to change to a later class date.

You have up to 2 years to complete your certificate. The majority of the certificates have 6 courses, which can be completed comfortably within 3 months

What is the time commitment?

You can expect to spend 4-6 hours per week of self-directed study time to complete your course.

Any pre-requisite for each of the certificate or courses?

Please refer to the third question under “Enrollment”.

Any suggested sequence to take the courses in a certificate?

Generally, the courses in a certificate can be taken in any sequence. For those with recommended sequences, we do suggest you follow the recommendations to optimize your learning.

What does course length of 2-3 weeks mean?

Most courses at eCornell are 2 weeks in length and will require 8-12 hours of self-directed study time over the two-week period. Some courses are 3 weeks in length and will require 12-18 hours of self-directed study time.

Why do the courses have start dates?

Each course will open at 9am EST on the start date you selected which is always on a Wednesday. Courses end at 11:59pm EST on Tuesday – either 2 or three weeks after the start date. All course work – readings, videos and assignments – must be complete before the end date of your course.

Why are there assignments in this course?

eCornell and Cornell University’s goal is that you can apply your learning and we have found through years of experience that required and graded assignments assure that you have not only gained the knowledge presented in the course but can apply what you learned.

Are my assignments graded?

Yes, assignments are graded by the course facilitator. Each assignment has a grading rubric which will help you understand how you earn a passing grade.

Why do assignments have due dates?

Assignment due dates help you to stay on track and participate fully in the collaborative aspect of the course. In addition, meeting assignment due dates assures that the facilitator has ample time to provide thorough feedback and you ample time to resubmit your assignment if necessary. If you are late submitting assignments, they will still be graded if they are received before the end of the course, but the facilitator feedback and your ability to resubmit the assignment will be limited.

If a course is available on more than one certificate, will I need to retake the course for the 2nd certificate?

No, you can use your one course for more than one certificate. You do not need to take it more than once.

How will I get my Certificate?

Once you complete all the courses within a program, you will be given an electronic copy of the certificate that you can download and print.

Is there a degree program or an MBA?

For the academic programs like degrees and MBAs, you need to enroll on campus at Cornell University. The eCornell program is an executive education program. You can earn Certificates and Masters Certificates from Cornell University.

Can I be transferred to another course schedule?

Yes, if something comes up along the way and you will not be able to attend any particular class, you need to give us a 48 hours notice before the class starts to change to a later class date.

Can I take 2 courses at the same time?

If you’re new to eCornell, we recommend starting with just one course to get familiar with the eCornell learning approach. Once you’re comfortable, you can then decide taking two courses simultaneously. Keep in mind that taking two courses means you’ll need to put in extra effort, like doing quizzes, participating in discussions, and completing projects for both courses. Taking three courses at once is also possible but would already be a stretch and might require you to take a break from work to manage it.

Can I take 2 certificates at the same time?

Yes, but we don’t recommend it unless you are very familiar with the eCornell program,

Can I be given an extension if I exceed the period of completion?

Generally speaking, if you have completed more than 50% of your course, you might be given an extra day. This is at the discretion of the facilitator. You need to ask your facilitator early and cite your request’s reasons. Again, it is at the discretion of the facilitator. Contact your facilitator from your eCornell student dashboard (Help > Ask Your Facilitator a Question). If your circumstances warrant and you have been working diligently but are struggling to complete the course, your facilitator can arrange for a brief extension (24-48 hours).

Can I still inquire from my facilitator even the course has already ended?

You can only interact with your facilitator during the course period. Should you have final clarifications, we encourage you to post your inquiries a few days before the course ends.

Can I use my smart phone or tablet to do my course?

eCornell strives to be tablet-friendly, and we continually work to ensure accessibility across platforms.

Some aspects of our courses may not be supported on tablets or mobile devices. For example, submitting assignments and opening some course documents are better suited for computer use. Also, you may be unable to download .zip files from the ‘Course Resources’ page, as the iPad does not allow this file type.

Flash is required when you use your webcam for recording/uploading your own videos, as well as uploading files, or assignments to a course. Other than these features, Flash is not required to use most areas of Canvas. Please note that some browsers may no longer support Flash. Either a computer/laptop / Flash-enabled device is necessary to submit the requirements of your course, or, another option is to install an app*. Keep in mind your tablet should allow most of the course participation.

How do I know that I passed the course?

Submission of assignments does not automatically equal a passing grade. Be sure to check your grade page after the submission of each assignment allowing your facilitator 24-48 hours to post

What if I fail to complete a course?

If you cannot finish a course on time and are marked incomplete, you have the option to retake the course for a fee of $75.

My course is over, why am I not marked as completed?

Even though your course has ended, your facilitator needs to evaluate your course project. If it meets all requirements, you will be marked as complete within 2 days after the course ends. Please avoid submitting your course project at the last minute, as your facilitator may request revisions, and you might not have enough time to make them.

Can I still have access to the course materials even after the course has ended?

Once your course period has come to an end, you have one additional week to access the course content from your Canvas Dashboard. This will give you an opportunity to download and save any files you want to keep, print the course content if you wish, or do a final review of the course discussion boards, etc. Take Note however that unless you were given time extension, you can no longer do any of the assignments, submission or interact with your fellow learners and your facilitator during this period. After this, your course will be archived and can be found by clicking Courses > All Courses from the Canvas Dashboard.”

I have enrolled only for 1 certificate with eCornell. When I log in to the student portal, I see another certificate name, which I have not enrolled, being listed in the portal. May I know why?

Many of our courses are part of more than one certificate program. So, when a student enrolls in one of those courses that is in multiple certificates, we list all the possible certificates on the student profile.

It allows the student to track how much they have done towards the second certificate if they decide to go ahead and pursue it.

Will I get a printed copy of my certificate?

After completing all courses for the Certificate, you will be given an electronic certificate which you can download and print from the student portal.

How fast can I finish my certificate?

Depending on the number of courses in a certificate, you can finish all courses within a few months. For example, a 6-course certificate can be completed within 3 months if courses are taken successively. On the other hand, you are given a maximum of 2-year validity from the date of the 1st course to finish a certificate.
