Professional Development

What is eCornell?

eCornell is Cornell University’s online learning platform which offers professional development courses.

I travel a lot to attend to company matters. How suitable are eCornell programs for me?

The eCornell program is designed for people who cannot afford to take days away from work and travel extensively. You can do the programs in your hotel room, at the airport whilst waiting for their flight, and in between meetings. You can even download materials to read and can also start writing your assignments and discussion points when you are on the plane.

Why should I register and pay through Genashtim?

As the legitimate partner of eCornell, Genashtim can provide local support in your time zone and in your local language. Genashtim can also provide eCornell alumni discounts on a per course basis, which is not available directly from eCornell.

I am a corporate client and wish to tailor the courses to our specific needs and wants of the company. Is this possible?

Our team of Learning Consultants are trained to do this. Please email us at, or call us at our local number, as indicated in our website.

What are the requirements for enrolment?

eCornell, as an executive education program from Cornell University, is designed for working executives. There will be active discussion boards, assignments and projects, which will need to call upon actual work experience. This will contextualise the learning and make meaningful contribution to the learning group, which is the hallmark of this unique form of collaborative eLearning. We reserve the right to review your resume before enrolling you into the program. This is to ensure that you will be able to get the most from this learning program, and similarly, for the benefit of the other learners in the group as well.

How do I enroll in an eCornell certificate through Genashtim?

Our Learning Consultants will guide you through finding the right course/certificate to enhance your career. They will also help and support as you take each course.

Are there any pre-requisites for any of the certificates or courses?

Generally, very few, as long as you are a working executive. Your Learning Consultant will advise you on the pre-requisites after getting the information from question 1 above. Some courses need to be taken in a sequence, and you will also be advised accordingly, depending on which course/certificate you choose. The courses under the following certificates have to be strictly taken in a sequence:

  • Design Thinking
  • Systems Design
  • Product Management
  • Healthcare Operations Management
What will happen if I move to another country in the middle of my certificate?

It will be seamless. You just continue with your courses. The only thing that you need to do is to inform us of any change in contact details, in case we need to get in touch with you. We also need to know your new country, so we can set the right time for your course reminder.

Can I enroll to a course on my own?

Your Learning Consultant is responsible for your course enrollment.

You will be provided with available schedules that you can choose from. You will be enrolled one course at a time to give you the flexibility to manage your schedule. However, if you already have planned your schedule ahead and you wish to be enrolled for the rest of your courses, just let your Learning Consultant know your preferred dates and he/she will enroll you accordingly.

Can I be enrolled to my next course right after I finish my current course?

Due to the long list of learners, classes tend to get filled very fast. Picking a schedule that will start at least in a month’s time has a higher chance of availability. Your Learning Consultant will notify you should there be an earlier schedule open for enrollment.

Can I avail a single course only and not a certificate?

Yes, however we encourage you to sign up for a certificate program. Taking a course will earn you a letter of completion only. On the other hand, you will be awarded with a Cornell University certificate when you complete a specific program.

When registering as a student of eCornell, how will it be different from registering as a Cornell University student?

When you register as a Cornell University student, you have to attend classes physically in the Ithaca campus in New York. Whereas when you register as an eCornell student, you will be studying in a virtual online classroom, but with
real international classmates and an instructor in the USA. You can access your courses and your classes anytime, from anywhere in the world.

Why can't a full class take just one additional learner?

When the class is full, we will not be able to add any extra student because Cornell University is very stringent about this. They have determined the maximum class size so that the instructor is able to ensure that every single participant not only understands all the content but is able to demonstrate application of the learning. Cornell University needs to ensure this quality of outcome as they will issue a Cornell University certificate should the right combination of courses be taken.

Can I ask for a refund if I decided not to proceed with my certificate/course?

Learners who have paid the full retail price for a certificate, are allowed 60 days to change their minds for a full refund (less banking/transaction charges). If you have consumed one or more courses, these will be deducted at the retail per-course price, from the payment made on the certificate. No refunds will be given for individual course payments, or for any special promotions or discounts.

Certificates and Courses

Are there exams to take at the end of the certificate program?

As the certificates will be issued by Cornell University, there are rather stringent processes in place to ensure that you have acquired the learning. For each course, there are a combination of:

• Quizzes (multiple choice questions)
• Discussions
• Boards with a certain degree of mandatory participation
• Assignments and projects
• Reflective essays

Hence, no examination is necessary.

How are the courses organized?

Except for the courses under Data Analytics Certificate, Data Analytics 360 Certificate, Nutrition and Healthy Living Certificate, Design Thinking Certificate, Negotiation Mastery Certificate, User Experience Design Certificate, Python for Data Science Certificate, Data Analytics in R Certificate, Wines of California, the Pacific Northwest, and New York Certificate and Python Programming Certificate which run for 3 weeks and International Public and NGO Management Certificate which run for 4 weeks, Majority of the courses run for two (2)weeks, starting on a Wednesday and ending the second Wednesday after that.

This gives you 2 weekends to catch up in case your working week gets too hectic.

Starting time:
Wednesday 8pm Jakarta time
Wednesday 9pm Malaysia, Manila, Singapore time
Wednesday 10 pm Japan time

Ending time:
Wednesday 2 weeks later at 10.59am Jakarta time
Wednesday 2 weeks later at 11:59am Malaysia, Manila, Singapore time
Wednesday 2 weeks later at 12:59pm Japan time

There are no specific times that require you to be online. It is suggested that you access the course regularly during the 2 weeks so that you will be in sync with the other learners in your class and have meaningful discussions with them on the discussion boards.

If you are new to eLearning, it might initially take you about 10 to 12 hours over the 2 weeks to complete the course. Our more seasoned learners can get through a course in 6 hours. Generally speaking, the content in each eCornell course is equivalent to the content quantity that you will find in a 2 to 3-day physical workshop or seminar.

Please click here to watch a 2-minute video on how a class is run.

Most of the courses will have a class starting every month. Some courses have two classes each month, and a few courses have classes in alternate months.

After you have paid and enrolled, you can select your class dates for each course and plan your entire certificate. In case something comes up along the way, and you will not be able to attend any particular class, you need to give us 48 hours’ notice before the class starts, to change to a later class date.

You have up to 2 years to complete your certificate. Majority of the certificates have 6 courses, and these can be completed rather comfortably within 3 months.

Any pre-requisite for each of the certificate or courses?

Please refer to 2(3) above.

Any suggested sequence to take the courses in a certificate?

Generally, the courses in a certificate can be taken by any sequence. For those with recommended sequences, we do suggest you follow the recommendations to optimize your learning.

If a course is available on more than one certificate, will I need to retake the course for the 2nd certificate?

No, you can use your one course for more than one certificate. You do not need to take it more than once.

How will I get my Certificate?

Is there a degree program or an MBA?

The eCornell program is an executive education program. You can earn Certificates and Masters Certificates from Cornell University. For the academic programs like degrees and MBAs, you need to enroll on campus at Cornell University.

Can I be transferred to another course schedule?

Yes, in case something comes up along the way and you will not be able to attend any particular class, you need to give us a 48 hours’ notice before the class starts to change to a later class date.

Can I take 2 courses at the same time?

Yes, if you are familiar with eLearning or have taken an eCornell course before. We have had learners who do 3 courses at the same time but that would be stretching it. You might need to take time off from work to do it.

Can I take 2 certificates at the same time?

Yes, but we don’t recommend it, unless you are very familiar with the eCornell program,

Can I be given an extension if I exceed the period of completion?

This is at the discretion of the instructor. Generally speaking, if you have completed more than 50% of your course, you might be given an extra day. You need to ask your instructor early, and to cite the reasons for your request. Again, it is at the discretion of the instructor.

Can I still inquire from my instructor even the course has already ended?

You can only interact with your instructor within the duration of the course period. Should you have final clarifications, we encourage to post your inquiries few days before the course ends.

Can I use my smart phone or tablet to do my course?

eCornell strives to be tablet-friendly, and we are continually working to ensure accessibility across platforms.

Certain elements within our courses may not be supported on tablets or mobile devices. For example, submitting assignments and the opening of some course documents, are better suited for computer use. Also, you may be unable to download .zip files from the ‘Course Resources’ page, as the iPad does not allow this file type.

Keeping this in mind, your tablet should allow participation in most of the course. Flash is required when you use your webcam for recording/uploading your own videos, as well as uploading files, or assignments to a course. Other than these features, Flash is not required to use most areas of Canvas. Please note that some browsers may no longer support Flash. Either a computer/laptop / Flash-enabled device is necessary to submit the requirements of your course, or, another option is to install an app*.

What if I fail to complete a course?

If you were not able to finish a course on time and marked incomplete, you have the option to retake the course with a course fee of $75.

Can I still have access to the course materials even after the course has ended?

After the course has ended, you are given an additional one week to access your course materials. You can download the printable version of the course materials and keep it as your personal copy.

Will I get a printed copy of my certificate?

After completing all courses for the Certificate, you will be given an electronic certificate which you can download and print from the student portal.

I have enrolled only for 1 certificate with eCornell. When I log in to the student portal, I see another certificate name, which I have not enrolled, being listed in the portal. May I know why?

Many of our courses are part of more than one certificate program. So, when a student enrolls into one of those courses that is in multiple certificates, we list all the possible certificates onto the student profile.

It gives the student an opportunity to track how much they have done towards the second certificate if they decided to go ahead and pursue it.
