Leaders must be in Touch with Employees’ Emotions

Managing employee emotions is a part of the crux of leadership goals to influence and lead your team to promote a better environment.

An article published by Quantum Workplace provides insights on how the complexity of emotions affects work engagement. Hence, psychology of leadership, new perspectives, and research are crucial to help recognize your employees’ emotions for you to manage them and improve your organization’s emotional quotient.

What are workplace emotions?

Workplace emotions are a range of emotions you experience in varying situations at work. Workplace attitudes are often influenced by emotions.

What are the common workplace emotions?

It is noteworthy to mention that common workplace emotions are both positive and negative – they are, but not limited to:

  • Happiness
  • Contentment
  • Excitement
  • Frustration
  • Stress
  • Anxiety

Remember, we all undergo different emotions at work, depending on our encounters. So, strive to generate more positive emotions for the benefit of everyone in your organization. To consolidate and augment positive workplace emotions, leaders can leverage psychology and conduct affirmative activities to keep the psyche of employees in desirable states. Keep in mind that the more you engage your employees, the more positive their emotions get.

How should leaders manage emotions in the workplace?

Employee emotions can have adverse effects and serious complications to a company if left unaddressed. You can manage them by:

  • Taking stock of all the varying employee emotions and the degrees of these emotions.
  • Striking a balance between supporting and encouraging the positive emotions and preventing and discouraging negative emotions.
  • Developing a culture of trust while practicing emotional intelligence (EQ) skills that facilitate the generation and expression of positive employee emotions.

It does not matter how well you handle your emotions; you must submit to the fact that you have little to no control over other people’s emotions. At the same time, it is important to have the skills to identify, acknowledge, and respond to them.
